Surname Listing - WILLIAMS (Wales, UK)

Counting down my Great-Grandparents, this week is Williams. There always seems to be some dispute among the Williams researchers. At the moment, there is a discrepancy in this line. This is what I'm using right now, but check out my full database (with notes and more info) if you're part of this family and want more information.

12 generations of WILLIAMS connected through:

4. Charles Ernest Loops II (1906-1977)

22528. JOHN WILLIAMS was born about 1582 in Wales.

************
Notes on Lewis Williams (#5632)...

From the research of Mrs. Carl Pittman of Tifton, Ga., daughter of John Clyde Williams of Bulloch CO., Ga.

This lineage has been proven in many books and accepted by the DAR,Society of Sons & Daughters of the Pilgrims, National Society of Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.

According to Mrs. Pittman, there are at least four men named Lewis Williams who were listed as immigrants to America in 1650. She is not100% positive, but feels strongly that the Lewis Williams of this lineage came over the Captain Richard Bond of Charles City Co.

Some researchers have said that there was an ancestor of this Lewis already in America, and that John Williams was the father or grandfather of Lewis, and that he is the one who came over from Wales. To Mrs. Pittman's knowledge, no one has ever come up with any solid proof of this. As far as any Genealogical Society is concerned, Lewis is the first to be in America.

*****
Again, a lot of discrepancies with this family. And difficult to research because, of course, there are SO many Williams of the same names, at the same times, in the same location. How do you sift through all the information?

I'll keep you posted.

The Family Bible

No doubt, the Family Bible is an invaluable resource for genealogical information. Where else could you write the births/deaths as keepsakes for your family, that would remain through the generations? I fear that this legacy is slowly dying; both because of the reduced number of bibles! And because we feel there are so many other ways of recording our family history. But I wonder, what would happen if all the electronic records disappeared? How many of us have really Written this information down, stored away for our families to see in the next generations to come?

My family is like many Southern families to keep wonderful records hidden in the pages of the family Bible. The problem is Finding the Bibles!

For example... my hunt for Amanda STUBBS. Amanda married Frederick Christopher Loops in Kinston, Lenoir Co, NC. She is the American mother to my Loops family. She is a vital tie in my ancestry! And for 17years, I have not had her name. Amanda this, Amanda that on document after document - Christenings, random tax records, estate records, church records. Either she is Amanda ? or Amanda Loops (and the variations of Loops that no one could spell).

FINALLY just this year, I broke down and bought a subscription to Ancestry (my frustration that you must PAY for genealogical information not-withstanding... there were files I needed). And low and behold, the NC death certificate for her daughter, Eva Loops, listed Amanda STUBBS as her mother. Oh my elation! Seriously... I called my father. I emailed the ladies in our Loops family email list - various cousins and other researchers I bug once a year or so with random tidbits I've picked up. Hi everyone! I found her - Amanda STUBBS!!

And from there began the exciting adventure of locating the STUBBS line (which sadly ends with her father John.. and now I'm stuck again) and BUCK line - maternal (which also ends just one generation more with, you guessed it, John Buck). Hmph.

STILL. What a triumph!

So I go to my father's house in NC (3,000 miles away) for my sister's wedding. His house is recent storage to a big box of pictures and random files discovered by family, which he casually hands over... ooh, here's new stuff for you to look through.
OH MY GOD!! I jumped at the box with crazy fury, skipping through pictures, SO fast (knowing I'll soon get the scanner and really detail each picture), and there at the botom are two, heavy, thick bibles.

First one I open, I flip to the back, the somewhat plasticky type pages and there on the 2nd page: (ick, it's not very clear)...

Amanda... STUBBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My heart crushed.
Ordinarily I'd be SO excited to get this information. But after 17years of Not having it, years of searching, and my triumph this year of patience paying off and finally discovering the document that had her name on it..... Yeah, No So Excited at this painful clear STUBBS, right there on the page in my grandfather's handwriting. YEESH.

Still, the point of the story... Family Bibles are cool. And invaluable to genealogy research. Already on this same page of "Father's Family" are listed many siblings I do not have in my database. Ooh, the mystery. I'll have to email Martha about the Mewborn family; I'll have to email the genealogical society about the Webb family. Yay! I'm off on a new hunt!

Research from a non-professional

It seems that in most families, there is one (if one) that holds and interest and diligence and fascination with family research. Some gather the pictures, some find their inner craftiness and scrapbook tales, some scour the world for that bit of data to piece things together. And every now and again, at a family dinner/wedding/reunion, you get to tell some of the tales you've discovered, and others' might be interested for a bit.
Or at least, that's my family.

I am not a professional. I teach a class on genealogy on the web (which I'd love to expand into a series of classes), that is based on my experiences, and mine alone. What do I know? I'm certainly not the greatest researcher, and my priorities have greatly changed over the years. Most of what I know now is how NOT to research, the mistakes you will make. It is only in the past few years that I feel I've begun to even touch the surface of being a GOOD, qualified researcher.

When you start researching at 17, and tend to be a math person already, it's about the puzzle. The data. Filling in the gaps, going as far back as you can.

And because of that, I have 10 years of research in names and history and data. And NO SOURCES. I have NO idea where half of the data I've discovered came from. It was from the web. As we all know (or, know NOW), that is highly subjective. It might be correct. It quite possibly is not. I have people in an old address list that I didn't even write down which family they're connected to, so writing to them or using them as sources now, after the fact, is impossible.

It's sad.
It's a learning experience.

So, I offer this as an apology to my database. To researchers of my families who stumble across my information and ask me for more, and I just don't have it.

The past 7years have been spent correcting data, rediscovering holes, filling in even more gaps and data with TRUE data, with SOURCES, with actual pieces of paper that I've scanned by going to the clerks of court (and trusting in documents found on Ancestry). There are times it seems it was all a waste - now that I'm having to correct so much, Base so much unfounded. But it makes for a clearer, more bonafide database of my Ancestry.

And now instead of just an empty database of 23000 names, I now have at least a few thousand that I know a bit of their lives, a story to put to their birth dates and death dates, and when a family member asks me a question, I have so much more to say.

Source your stuff, ya'll.
It is a learning process, but that's the first lesson EVERYONE needs to learn.

_____________________________
The LOVEALL family is one of my favorite to research because it is a made-up name. So far we have not discovered any LOVEALL's of the United States that come from anyone but Henry, aka Desolate Baker. It makes it a fun puzzle to piece together.

Difficulty arises in the multiple families that later changed their name to LOVELL, which is not an isolated name, and has many other English origins; therefor it cannot be assumed that all U.S. LOVELL's are from the LOVEALL family name.

I will put more information on the history of Henry Loveall, aka Desolate Baker, in a later post.

If you are of the LOVEALL family or have any information on this family, please leave me a comment!

Surname Starter - DEKLE (Germany)

I'm just going to make my way through my main surnames. A fun look for me to see how much more research I need to do, and gives me a few posts to start off this blog. You know, let's get this thing going already. Again, I'm following Randy Seaver's method from his Surname Saturdays. Check out his blog if you haven't - I can't imagine anyone reading any genealogy blog not knowing about Genea-Musings, but just in case.

Charles C. Deckel, Baron, is the fathest known ancestor. George Deckel is in my database from years ago, before I learned to SOURCE. Oh my goodness, let that be the first lesson anyone ever learns - Source, Source Everything.

What I have from the Dekle Family genealogy (a site that no longer exists and I have no further contact information because, again, this was before I wrote it all down):

"In Germany in the 18th century, there was a Baron named Charles C. Deckel (Baron Von Deckel) who lived in the city of Hanover. Baron Von Deckel served during the rule of Charles VI (1711-1740). Charles VI wasa son of Leopold I who was the ruler of Germany from 1658 to 1705.Another son of Leopold was Joseph I who was the ruler from 1705 to 1711.This Baron Von Deckel was the father of Charles and John Deckel. When the sons, Charles and John, were nearing manhood, they were faced with the ordeal of going through the severely harsh military training program that all German youths of that era were put through. The survivors of the program were the survival of the fittest, so to speak. Sons Charles and John, with a cousin Friedrich, all with the name of Deckel, decided that they didn't want any part of the military training and left Hanover. They stowed away aboard a sailing ship and eventually arrived in the Harbor at Savannah, Ga. Shortly afterwards, they jumped ship and escaped to the countryside. After gaining the safety of the countryside, Charles and Friedrich decided they wanted to go north, which they did. John chose to remain in the south and settled in Effingham County near Savannah. In the 1790 census of Chester County, PA (West Chester, Pa., is the county seat), Friedrich Deckel is listed as head of family. Nothing has been learned to date about what happened to Charles Deckel."

Surname Starter - LOOPS (Germany)

Well, so much for starting off with a bang! It's taken me a while to get organised, you see.

Enyhoo, let's start off with a Surname. I'm following Randy Seaver's format from his Surname Saturday (which will hopefully be one blogabit I can get in to), using the Ahnentafel Report. I've created these reports for years and I even know how to spell Ahnentafel. But I'll admit before writing the word down in this paragraph, I had to go to Wikipedia to look it up. I've never ventured to explore what exactly this report means. Go do it! You'll feel smarter :-)

We shall start simply with LOOPS (the link takes you to my website so you can get more information on the LOOPS family)

And that's it. This has been a fascinating and frustrating line to research. Two brothers came from Germany and were separated upon entering New York. Charles to a labor camp in Wisconsin, Frederick to a labor camp in Maine. Charles stayed in Wisconsin, Frederick fled and eventually landed in Kinston, North Carolina. Eventually the two brothers would meet and their children would communicate.

By two generations later, neither family knew the other existed.

Just finding each other has been heartwarming and a bit overwhelming. Both families knew that LOOPS was a made-up name, but neither had ideas on the origin. Until about 8years ago a document was found by Susan Bauer, a cousin, that stated Helmuth LUEPS and Caroline SCHUETT. Oh tears!!! I have yet to see this document and have yet to find another document to prove this name. But it's what we go on for now.
